LiviJ had her 2 week post accident checkup with the specialist in SF yesterday, so I thought I'd update you on how it went.
He could tell just by feeling her head that the bone is starting to reform and the "indent" isn't as big, which means we are on the path to healing. However, it still has a long way to go. He seemed pleased with how we were handling the helmet situation and basically the recipe is still the same. If she's laying low in the house, no helmet is required, but she needs to be careful. All other activities require the helmet. Still no playground equipment, horses, bikes, etc. for at least another 4 weeks when we return for another checkup to reeveluate. He wanted to emphasise that if she should reinjure that same spot while it is still broken, we could do more damage than when she initially came in. So, don't think I'm just being that paranoid parent forcing her child to wear this uncomfortable helmet in the heat when she looks like she's doing just fine :)
I asked him about the minor memory issues and he says that's perfectly normal. Every brain handles a concusion differently. He once had a patient who he would classify had a minor concusion and he couldn't remember who he was for 3 years. On the flip side, he had another patient that he would have classified as a more serious concusion, and he was fine in 2 weeks. So, he was not concerened by that and we are grateful that the things she "forgets" are very minor and this is temporary.
Everything else also seems very normal for only being 2 weeks out. I've been keeping a journal every day of what she says hurts, when it hurts, when she needs tylenol, everything. He looked it over and it all seemed very normal. It's not uncommon for her to still have headaches and "down times". But he says what we want to see is that they start to get further and fewer in between over the next 4 weeks. We already see such an improvement and basically, to sum it up, we are on the right track. So, all is good news so far.
Thank you for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers. Once again I ask for an extra prayer of patience for her as she already desperately wants to do things that are off limits. She will try going back to school today and the playground is out of the question till the end of the school year. Yow! We bought a "princess box" after her appt yesterday and filled it with new recess goodies....side walk chalk, bubbles, toy horsies and barbies. (Let me know of any other good ideas to keep her safely occupied).
Thanks again for keeping in touch!
